RMIT University

This double degree gives student an insight into human, plant and animal biology exploring ways to improve health and treat disease. Biomedical science courses allow student’s to understand how the human body functions, and the responses of the body to various diseases, exercise, diet, internal disturbances and environmental influences. The biotechnology component covers plant, animal and micro-organisms and how the biological process can be used in practical applications. Students will learn basic techniques in molecular biology and genetics that are applied to problems like diagnosing genes that cause cancer, making crops and livestock less vulnerable to disease and making food safer.
Higher Mathematics and one of the following- Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics or VCE Units 3 and 4 - one of Physical Education, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics Methods (CAS), Specialist Mathematics or Physics.
The major studies in this course gives an insight to minimize biological haphazard by applying basic techniques in molecular biology and genetics .
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 70%. For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
This degree qualifies graduates for professional membership of scientific societies like the Australian Society for Microbiology and the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Graduates work in research, production and testing positions in government and private laboratories. Potential employers include:Local, State and Commonwealth governments including the DPI (control of plant and animal diseases), CSIRO (research in genomics, molecular biology, proteomics), Medical research institutes like the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (research into human disease), hospitals (research staff), universities (teaching and research), secondary teaching (teachers and technical staff), private industry (research, quality control and production) like CSL Ltd (vaccines) and law firms (patent development).
