This program is about the science of large-scale food manufacturing, and how food is made so that it is safe, nutritious and meets consumers needs. Students will learn how to apply science in a socially responsible way and gain the skills required to develop goods and services for the marketplace. The students are trained in the full range of theoretical and practical aspects of food science and technology and nutrition. Students are enabled to develop novel, healthy and functional food products that meet consumer demands and comply with government and industrys strict safety and health guidelines.
Mathematics or VCE Units 3 and 4 Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics.
The major studies include science of large-scale food manufacturing, and how food is made so that it is safe, nutritious and meets consumers needs.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 65%.For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
As a graduate, Student’s will be eligible for Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST) membership and nutrition stream graduates may also be eligible to apply for registration as a nutritionist with the Nutrition Society of Australia.
This program prepares students for working in a broad range of roles in the food industry. Graduates of the food technology stream find jobs in large food processing companies like Nestlé, Cadbury, Simplot, Heinz and Kraft in research and development, marketing or quality assurance roles. Graduates of the nutrition stream generally work in food companies in areas of product development, marketing and regulatory affairs, or complete further study. Many graduates have progressed to managerial roles in food companies, while some have taken up roles in government departments or regulatory bodies. Others have worked in international food companies and rural and Melbourne-based smaller food companies, or have started their own private businesses.There is also scope for nutrition stream students to select electives that will allow them to articulate into dietetics, or diploma of education programs elsewhere.
