This course combines two previous Curtin programs: the Bachelor of Science (Health Information Management) and the Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences). It is designed to broaden employment opportunities by enabling students to specialise in either health information management, or to complete a combination of public health and business subjects in a health sciences major.The management of information is critical to ensuring quality care throughout the health system. Health information management is a challenging profession involving: clinical knowledge, information technology, database management, administration. Health records serve as a database for: health care planning, management decisions ,legal and administrative purposes, research, identifying trends for the treatment of disease ,evaluating the standards and quality of patient care.Health information management professionals are considerate of ethical and legal matters regarding the personal and sensitive nature of information collected and processed.This major is unique in Western Australia and combines scientific, technical and administration expertise to help students to obtain the skills needed to work in the field of health information management. Core units, particularly in first year, will provide students with an introduction to: human biology,medical terminology, disease classification systems, epidemiology and biostatistics ,management theory, fundamental computing and health information systems. Study in your second and third years includes units in: database management, electronic health information systems and health informatics, health economics, casemix, clinical costing.Other areas of study will provide students with an understanding of quality improvement principles, research methodology, human resource management and health services management.Students will experience professional practice throughout the course by undertaking project work and visiting health facilities, including community health centres and a variety of public and private hospitals. Students may choose to travel interstate and overseas for broader experience. Our staff maintain strong links with the local health and information professions to provide students with the opportunity for extensive hands-on experience.

In this course major studies includes development of scientific, technical and administration expertise to help students to obtain the skills needed to work in the field of health information management. As well the major studies also includes health management or general multidisciplinary health sciences.Core units, particularly in first year, will provide you with an introduction to: human biology, medical terminology, disease classification systems, epidemiology and biostatistics, management theory , fundamental computing and health information systems.The health management option will give an awareness and understanding of: current health issues and organisations, management theory, health law, resource management, information technology.It also provides the flexibility to undertake study in other areas.The general studies option gives the opportunity to combine studies in a number of health areas and to choose one subject area for in-depth learning. Professional practice placements may also be available to help reinforce your learning.This major is particularly suitable if students have previously completed a professional qualification not of degree status, such as nursing, paramedical, dental therapy or medical laboratory techniques.
To be eligible to this course, Students normally need to have graduated from high school with the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), or an equivalent qualification, and gained an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) that satisfies Curtin's entry requirements.Year 12 exam result remains valid indefinitely. Scores dating back to 1992 (including the TEA out of 400 and the TES out of 510) can be converted to the current ranking, the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), with the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre ATAR calculator.The other eligibilty criteria includes:- 1) Successful completion of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). 2)  Successful completion of the Alternative Test for Adult Admission (prior to STAT). 3)  Successful completion of the Mature age Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE). 4)   General Certification of Education (advanced levels). 5)  TAFE or Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications. 6) Current Division 1 General or Mental Health Nursing Registration with a State Nursing Board in Australia. 7) Successful completion of the first year of a bachelor degree course at another Australian university. 8) Successful completion of two Curtin full degree level units via extension study and English competence. 9) Successful completion of two degree level units via Open Universities Australia (OUA) and English competence. 10)Successful completion of two degree level units at an Australian university and English competence.
The University’s professionally accredited health sciences programs are housed in the Fones School of Dental Hygiene, the College of Chiropractic, the College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Acupuncture Institute, the Physician Assistant Institute and the Nutrition Institute. Each offers clinics and resources to the public. The degree programs, which range from associate and baccalaureate programs in Dental Hygiene to doctoral programs in Chiropractic (D.C.) and Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.), offer state-of-the-art curricula and significant clinical experiences. The members of the faculty include skilled instructors with backgrounds in the biomedical and clinical sciences.
